How to ensure the sealing integrity of storage tanks

In industrial production, storage tanks are widely used for storing liquids, gases, or other materials, and their sealing integrity directly affects production safety, environmental protection, and the integrity of materials. Therefore, how to effectively ensure the sealing performance of storage tanks is a problem that must be highly valued in the process of engineering design and use.

Firstly, the guarantee of sealing integrity starts from the design stage of storage tanks. During the design, appropriate materials and structural forms must be selected according to the nature of the stored medium (such as corrosiveness, volatility, toxicity, flammability, and explosiveness). For example, for volatile or toxic media, internal floating roof tanks or pressure tanks are often used to reduce the risk of medium volatilization and leakage. At the same time, structural design should avoid stress concentration and welding defects that may cause leakage.

Furthermore, the manufacturing and installation process is a key link in ensuring sealing integrity. During the manufacturing process, the quality of welds is the core factor affecting sealing integrity. It is necessary to strictly follow the welding process specifications, adopt automatic welding technology, reduce human errors, and assess the quality of welds through means such as X-ray and ultrasonic testing. During the installation process, it is necessary to ensure that flange connections, valves, and sealing gaskets are installed correctly and tightened to prevent leakage caused by improper installation.

Secondly, the selection of sealing materials is also crucial. Different media have different requirements for the corrosion resistance, temperature resistance, and pressure resistance of sealing materials. Common sealing materials include rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and metal gaskets. Selection should be based on working conditions to ensure that sealing materials do not age, deform, or permeate over a long period of operation.

In addition, regular maintenance and inspections are effective means to ensure sealing integrity. Enterprises should establish a comprehensive storage tank inspection system and use leakage detection instruments, infrared thermal imaging technology, and other means to regularly inspect storage tanks and their accessories, so as to discover and deal with potential leakage points in a timely manner.

Finally, setting up safety protection measures is also an important supplement to improving sealing integrity. For example, installing devices such as level gauges, pressure gauges, and breathing valves can prevent sealing failure caused by overpressure or underpressure; at the same time, setting up leakage alarm and collection systems can allow for immediate treatment in case of leakage, reducing the risk of accidents.

In summary, ensuring the sealing integrity of storage tanks is a systematic project that requires comprehensive consideration from multiple aspects such as design, manufacturing, installation, material selection, and maintenance. Only through scientific design, rigorous construction, and standardized management can the safe and reliable operation of storage tanks be truly realized, providing a strong guarantee for industrial production and environmental protection.
